About this auction

“Do you know that the Campbell’s Soup Company has not sent me a single can of soup?.” -Andy Warhol

BNO’s Pop & Post-War auction offers a generous representation of art spanning these periods, but with a common theme. Pop Art sought to reflect the social values and environment from which it sprang. Thus, the artists focused on the preoccupations shared by most American consumers: food, cars and romance.

Typically, this was achieved using brash, or satirical, imagery with strong visual impact. And if they were criticized for concerning themselves with such subject matter, they could simply say they were simply (in Shakespeare's words) "holding the mirror up to nature", or in their case "modern society".

If nothing else, Pop Art was the Post-War expression of a world wholly preoccupied with the pursuit of materialism. The revitilization of social commentary by urban and street artists has combined the sensibilities of Pop Art, with contemporary and topical subject matters- providing a re-birth of art used to reflect popular culture.

The satirical and sometimes ironic commentary of Pop Art continues today in the Street and Contemporary Art movements of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Thrashbird, DEATH NYC and other street artists.

We are thrilled to offer the works of the following artists in our Pop & Post War Art Auction:  DEATH NYC, Shepard Fairey, Thrashbird, D*Face, WIJ…, Andy Warhol, Victor Vasarelly, Istvan Bernath, Daniel Dust, Tom Everhart, Mahi Tarek, and John Paul Fauves.
