About this auction

BNO is delighted to present a carefully curated auction of Abstract and Surrealist Art.

“Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision.”

—Salvador Dali

Abstract Art can be a painting or sculpture (including assemblage) that does not depict a person, place or thing in the natural world. Strictly speaking, the word abstract means to separate or withdraw something from something else. With abstract art, the subject of the work is based on what you see: color, shapes, brushstrokes, size, scale and, in some cases, the process. Abstract art is often seen as carrying a moral dimension, in that it can be seen to stand for virtues such as order, purity, simplicity and spirituality. Representative abstract artists include: Georgia O’Keefe, Piet Mondrian, Jackson Pollock, Vassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Joan Miro, Frank Stella, Mark Rothko, Alexander Calder, and Robert Motherwell.

Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and is best known for its visual artworks and writings. The aim was to "resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality into an absolute reality, a super-reality".  Artists painted unnerving, illogical scenes with photographic precision, created strange creatures from everyday objects and developed painting techniques that allowed the unconscious to express itself. Representative surrealist artists include: Andre Breton, Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Man Ray, Andre Masson, Rene Magritte, Luis Bunuel, Leonora Carrington, and Salvador Dali.

Artists in this auction include:  Salvador Dali, Joan Ponc, Eugene Hawkins, Victoria Blak, Bebu Dura, Albert Castaneda, Billy Barkley, Juliette Cove, Eliot Eames Saarinen, Alexander Donskoi, Angel Muriel, Mathias Duhamel, and Adam Stone.
